Esteemed Queens Senator Supports Catsimatidis

maltese-serphinIndependent Republican John Catsimatidis was  endorsed this afternoon by former State Senator Serphin R. Maltese of Queens.

Maltese, who also served as Queens County Republican Party Chairman, called Catsimatidis “the only candidate, Republican or Democrat who has the hands on experience needed to run a city like New York.”

“He gained that experience as a self-made businessman who has built companies from the ground up; balancing budgets, making payrolls and creating tens of thousands of good paying jobs,” said Maltese.

Maltese has a history of independent decision-making. Before winning his second term, Senator Maltese was opposed by political bosses in Queens who objected to his independent stance on behalf of his constituents and forced him to seek nomination by write-in vote, according to the Juniper Civic Association which named him Man of The Year in 2002.

“In the largest primary write-in vote in our nation’s history and with no other race on the ballot, Senator Maltese won renomination over his opponent by an astounding 6,243 to 237 margin,” according to the article.

As Senator, Maltese, whom also served in the Korean War, distinguished himself by pioneering legislation for veterans. “In 1990, Maltese was the prime sponsor of the legislation that authorized the creation of the 250-bed State Veterans Nursing Home at St. Albans. He has been an active sponsor and guardian of the Veterans Home ever since,” according to The Serf Maltese Archives.

Maltese represented the 15th Senatorial District in Queens County which includes the communities of Forest Hills Gardens, Glendale, Hamilton Beach, Howard Beach, Maspeth, Middle Village, Old Howard Beach, Ridgewood, Woodhaven, and parts of Elmhurst, Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, Ozone Park, Rego Park, Richmond Hill, South Richmond Hill, South Ozone Park, Sunnyside and Woodside.

[Update] Maltese will be on Catsimatidis payroll as a consultant, but not yet.

A campaign committee controlled by Queens Republican political operative John Haggerty, who is on trial for allegedly stealing $1.1 million of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s money, is three months late in filing its disclosure report with the state Board of Elections, a BOE spokesman said Tuesday.

Haggerty, a Forest Hills resident, started the 28th Assembly District Republican Committee in October 2009 with a $20 deposit, according to campaign finance records.

In November 2009, about three weeks after he was elected to a third term, Bloomberg wired $120,000 to the committee, records showed.

Campaign committees are required to file their disclosure reports every six months with the BOE.

The last filing for the 28th Assembly District Republican Committee was made in January. It has yet to report its July disclosures.

Haggerty attorney Dennis Vacco could not be reached for comment.
