Avella Defends The IDC

tonyavella

Elections are coming up…

Pragmatism in politics or a betrayal of core values?

In a press release, Sen. Avella makes a bold statement of principle leaving us to wonder:

Does joining the IDC and cooperating with Senate Republicans make him (or any member of the IDC for that matter) any less of a Democrat? Sen. Avella doesn’t think so. See links below.

FYI: SENATOR AVELLA SHARES TWO OP-ED ARTICLES DEFENDING THE INDEPENDENT DEMOCRATIC CONFERENCE

The Democrats in the Senate minority are no truer Democrats than those in the IDC. Just because the members of the IDC have determined that it is in the best interest of their constituents (and themselves) to share power with the Republicans, does not make them any less principled or worthy of carrying their party’s standard.

~Watch out if you try to be bipartisan in Albany. You’re hands-across-the-aisle approach to lawmaking is not welcome there, particularly in the Capitol.

Grace Meng ‘Disappointed’ With Tony Avella

Grace Meng, Queens Politics

What does it mean when the nicest person in politics is suddenly calling you out?

You’ve been a bad boy Tony.

At her campaign announcement, Grace Meng said how deeply disappointed she was with Avella’s switch to the IDC.

This means a little more than at first glance: Meng is an optimist known for her sincerity, warmth, and candor to everyone – even her political enemies – which comes in part from longstanding roots in her hometown district and an old school sense of respect. Grace gives a mother’s touch to everything, sort of like the district’s ever-watchful matriarch, always reluctant to scold you in public, so when she  spoke of her feelings during a press conference about Tony Avella and his IDC debacle (an old colleague mind you), we couldn’t help but feel like our mother just gave us that look of REAL disappointment.

John Liu wasn’t happy about Tony either, but it’s Grace’s comments we should be mindful of, no matter how delicate.

[From The Politicker] State Senator Tony Avella’s decision to join the Independent Democratic Conference is irking ex-Comptroller John Liu and Congresswoman Grace Meng.

Mr. Liu and Ms. Meng–who like Mr. Avella, are Democrats hailing from northeast Queens–criticized Mr. Avella when asked about about his recent move to join the breakaway conference Democrats governing the State Senate with the Republican Party.

“It’s disappointing to say the very least,” Ms. Meng told Politicker at an unrelated press conference. “I think the Democrats, especially the Democratic senators, have worked very hard on issues that not only affect Democrats throughout the state, but affect everyone, all working families. And so I was disappointed at the very least.”

Does Your Senator Ever Embarrass You?

Screen Shot 2014-02-27 at 5.08.43 AM

Can anyone name a key piece of legislation that has affected the lives of residents in his district? Or a capital project? The answer is no as Tony Avella continues to campaign for a better salary.

Ladies and gents let’s look at the distinguished history of the candidate that runs for anything, anyhow, anytime.

Within a four year period, Tony Avella ran for mayor, senator, and borough president, so is it to anyones surprise that he sold out his constituency in order to become a member of a separate caucus?

Why is he selling out? Is it because he’ll make more money and get more staff – all to run for another office because thats what political prostitutes do? They don’t care about the people; they only care about their own interests and self-preservation.

When Avella was running for Beep he was with Senator Gianaris, and you’d see him with Senator Huntley and other indicted politicians. So what ended up happening? Avella dropped out mid-race to avoid a political disaster. It proves he’s only had one interest: to take a paycheck from government. Tony Avella has been on the public dime his entire life.

Avella has no political values or core beliefs. Now we don’t mind when elects stand up for what they believe in, but Avella is all about what will bring him to the next political step.

But wait a minute. Is this the same IDC that opened the door and accepted the likes of Malcolm Smith? Is it the same cabal of coo coos that supported Hiram Monserrate and Pedro Espada as they ripped off the government and empowered themselves politically? There’s nothing independent about this move; it’s all about self preservation and political advancement.

Let’s face it folks, Tony Avella is nothing more than a cheap politician that has only represented himself. Why else would he take donations from convicted felon Richard Lipsky or fill the College Point Little League grounds with toxic waste? When all is said and done, Tony Avella is all about himself. Government is no longer of the people, government is for special interests, and Tony Avella is the perfect example.

If you want to see the worst example of politician, you'll find Tony Avella: self-promoter extraordinaire.

IDC Move Leaves Avella Vulnerable to Challengers

091908avellaoflahertyfb001

Benedict Arnold eat your heart out.

Say it ain’t so Tony, the people are outraged.

Tony Avella was sent to Albany with a clear mandate by the Democratic Party to tow the line yet what he did was disgraceful and self-centered.

The good people of the 11th Senatorial did not vote for Tony Avella just to give the GOP another seat and get another chairmanship; he was sent to do work as a DEMOCRAT, and many people in this community supported him for years, yet now he turned his back on us? That’s disloyalty.

According to a Democratic insider, “The IDC is about 5 senators crying over spilled milk by joining Dean Skelos –it’s about getting more money, more staff and a committee chair – it’s not about people it’s about self-interest.”

Tony’s betrayal will not come without consequences. Much of the Democratic establishment have already turned their eyes to seeking out a challengerThe sudden switch could hurt the efforts by mainstream Dems to reclaim control of the Senate in this year’s election cycle, and no one will just forgive that. However, in this district, Tony has some name recognition and he’s loved by many, that is, the many that can’t look past the cheap headlines.

Nevertheless, with Tony switching sides, he’s vulnerable now more than ever for a worthy primary challenger to arise — especially when County leaves him hanging in the dust… Or will they?
