Grace Meng Robbed In D.C

Congresswoman Grace Meng was robbed and beaten outside of her Washington D.C. apartment, according to the Queens Courier.

Meng, although bruised, downplayed the incident and though suffering from minor cuts and bruises, resumed her daily schedule shortly after a visit to a nearby hospital.

While the attacker fled on foot, the incident raises questions about crime and poverty statistics in our nation’s capitol.

Crimes of desperation?

Poverty is an overwhelming problem in D.C. Some studies, taking into account the high cost of living in the capitol, estimate the poverty level as high as 23% compared to 19% by official statistics. Nonetheless, poverty is currently on the rise in GW’s shadow, meaning nearly 1 in 5 residents living below the poverty line, and Meng’s attack was in no doubt symptomatic of this employment crisis and ever-widening income gap.

Congresswoman Visits Queens Incubator

(l to r) E-Space Founder Katherine Gregory, Odette Fada of Rana USA, Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez, and Seth Bornstein, Executive Director of the Queens Economic Development Corporation. They are wearing hair nets as required by city law.

What’s cooking in Queens?

Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-12) donned a hairnet to hone her skills in one of the largest kitchens on the East Coast.

As the ranking Democrat on the House Small Business Committee, Velazquez payed a visit to Entrepreneur-Space, one of the premiere culinary and business incubators located in Long Island City, Queens.

Simply known as the “E-Space,” the building houses various fully equipped kitchens, office space and support staff  for early- stage catering, retail, and wholesale food businesses.

Velázquez discussed government programs aimed at helping small businesses with Seth Bornstein, Executive Director of the  Queens Economic Development Corporation. Velazquez  also toured the facilities where she traded secrets for the best method to prepare  lasagna with Odette Fada, the corporate chef for Rana USA inc.

QP is a strong advocate for Queens as a magnet for entrepreneurs and new talent.
