A Clue To County’s Endorsement For Beep?

Brooklyn has the cannoli man, Queens has the kingmaker.

Melinda Katz is holding a fundraiser at Portofino restaurant in Queens where a high ranking democratic official will make a special appearance.

With the 2013 City Council races already heating up, many are wondering who will get the coveted County Endorsement and it just so happens that none other than political boss Rep. Joe Crowley will be the surprise guest at the fundraiser.

Will Crowley make a surprise endorsement?

Katz, a lobbyist, will be locked in a tough battle for control of Borough Hall with heavyweight opponents including City Councilman Peter Vallone, widely considered the frontrunner, Councilman Leroy Comrie, and State Senator Jose Peralta. Both Peralta and Comrie have considerable ties to the party, so at this point the County endorsement is really a toss up.

Even though Crowley will be attending more fundraisers, as reported by Colin Cambell,  we will venture to guess the the real clue is which fundraiser he doesn’t  attend.

George Arzt, the top former campaign advisor for John Liu, has also confirmed attendance.

Below is the invitation in case you decide to go and if you do, please send us video or audio.

The Angry Lancman

Rory Lancman is unusually unhappy these days.

With years of political experience, why is it so easy for a professional legislator to fly off the handle?

Rory Lancman is enraged and we can see why, sort of. His camp – as well as many insiders – believes that the candidacy of Jett Gottlieb is a sham perpetrated by the County organization to split the Jewish vote that Lancman needs to win.

As the rumors were finally confirmed that another Jewish candidate will be running, Lancman went out and lambasted County for allegedly propping up Gottlieb and trying to derail his chances of winning. The rationale was that Gottlieb had a patronage gig at the Board of Elections so he must be susceptible to their influence.

The conspiracy theories grew like weeds on a neglected tomb, but so far it’s just speculation.

This month, shortly after Crowley threw her hat in the ring and after County convinced Avi Fink to leave the Stavisky faction to spearhead Liz’s campaign, allegedly, Lancman had enough. His tough as nails campaign team went on the offensive, “Get the fake out of the race,” he told the Daily News, which prompted responses from County leader Joe Crowley and a swath of Democratic insiders who said things like, “He lobbied too hard, [for the seat],” according to an article in the Observer by Colin Cambell.

Who is the real Rory? Lancman is an excellent communicator. He fought for six years in the Assembly and is highly regarded as an authority on matters of public policy. He’s smart and articulate yet soft-spoken, and he has an outstanding Democratic club, which he helped organize.  So it seems a bit out of character to whine and cry foul particularly when all the evidence is circumstantial.

Lancman is well acquainted with the wheeling and dealing of campaign politics so why is this rumor so much of a shocker to him? This is not meant to imply that Jeff Gottlieb is some sort of enlightened statesman, but what we are saying is that everyone has the right to run for public office even if someone encouraged them to run. After all, Gottlieb said he wants to do it and it doesn’t look like anyone held a gun to the 70-year-old historian’s head.

Like the ancient Citron trees of Israel, Gottlieb has strong roots in the conservative Jewish communities. Yes, Rory has a stellar record of fighting for Israel, but conservative Jews don’t have a voice to fall back on. Gottlieb might just be that guy.

Let the people decide.

CD Maps Are Finally Here

State Senate Republicans release their Congressional maps onto the world.

Respect to Colin Cambell who was up at Midnight to break the news,

Because these maps are independent of the Democrat-controlled State Assembly, they have limited value and aren’t necessarily indicative of where any compromise map would be resolved. Additionally, overly partisan maps are of limited value to the courts as they consider their many proposed options.

UPDATE 12:35am: State Assemblyman Rory Lancman, a NY9 Congressional hopeful had this to say on his Facebook,

Koo Sticks Up For Liu

Three cheers for Koo as he steps up to the plate to address Murdoch’s media mayhem.

Colin Cambell Politicker: Councilman Peter Koo, who recently switched parties to the Democratic Party, said the media’s treatment of New York City Comptroller John Liu has been biased and wrong in a recent interview with Roberto Perez.

“As an Asian-American politician, I think it’s really unfair,” he said. “I think the media, they ganged up against him.”

Last year, an FBI sting against one of Mr. Liu’s campaign bundlerscaused Mr. Liu’s mayoral ambitions to take a significant hit.

Mr. Koo went on to defend Mr. Liu’s integrity. “It’s [not] proven that he directly knows about this, or his staff knows about this, so why do you link the two together?” he asked. ”The FBI used some sting operation, they offered cash to people, it’s like a political entrapment to me. I think it’s really unfair. Even though the guy is guilty, … only he’s guilty, he has nothing to do with John Liu.”

Mr. Koo, who contributed to Mr. Liu’s campaign even when he was still registered as a Republican, also argued that this type of fundraising controversy is hardly unique to Mr. Liu. “This kind of scandal happened before with Hillary Clinton, happened with Al Gore. Whoever get’s caught in the scandal, those guys should be punished, not the candidates, because they have nothing to do with this.”

NY Primary Date Finally Set

http://southleedslife.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/vote.jpg

Save The Date: June 26th

Colin Cambell from the Politicker: After some confusion, it’s finally been decided when Republican and Democratic candidates will be voting for their nominees in 2012.

A judge’s ruling set the primary date for June 26th, but only for federal offices: U.S. House and Senate races. There will be pressure for the other 2012 primaries, outside of the April 24th presidential primary, will follow suit.

It is still possible for Albany to keep a later primary date for state legislative races, but that would cost money and such a plan could face opposition from a governor that prides himself in fiscal restraint.

The issue had been complicated by a federal law passed requiring ballots be sent to overseas and military voters at least 45 days in advance of the election day.

The June primary, as opposed to a later primary that the Senate Republicans had pushed for, could push the redistricting process forward even faster. The later date would have allowed the legislature additional time to negotiate lines before the courts were forced to intervene so that candidates have actual districts to run in.
