Candidate Fights For Right To Wear American Flag Pin

Joe_Head-shot_highres-300x450Joseph Concannon, a retired NYPD Captain running on the Reform Line for City Council District 23, claims the city’s Campaign Finance Board refused to include his picture on their online voter guide because he had an American flag pin on his lapel.

“This is the reason I am running for City Council. Why shouldn’t a candidate be able to put on a campaign pin or heaven forbid an image of the flag of the United States of America?”

While Concannon entered the race late, he missed the cutoff date to be included into the printed version of the NYC Voter Guide, but after multiple calls from supporters, the CFB relented and allowed him to submit his picture and a link to his website. And he did.

The picture Concannon submitted included an American flag pin on his lapel, and now the campaign is claiming Giovanni Mejia, the CFB’s Associate Counsel, has disallowed Concannon’s submission of his “standard head shot” including the flag pin.

Concannon said that the CFB will only accept a photo without the pin, according to a press release. His campaign is claiming the CFB’s decision is symptomatic of longstanding “fraudulent policies of quashing insurgent candidates and protecting incumbents.”

Concannon stated: “This is not a banana republic. This is the United States of America. Every candidate should be wearing the American flag. This is a clear cut case of promoting anti-Americanism from a government agency charged with running free and fair democratic elections in New York City.”

Outraged, Concannon is calling for the dismissal of Mr. Mejia for conveying what he calls ‘anti-American policies.’

The CFB was unavailable for comment at time of publication.

A press conference is scheduled for Tuesday, 9AM at 245-01 Jericho Turnpike in Jamaica to protest the decision.

Joseph Concannon is running against incumbent Councilman Mark Weprin.
