Thompson and Peralta Team Up To Blast Immunization Center Closing

peralta[Press Release] City Turns Back on Children and Families Across Western Queens Just Weeks Before the Start of School

New York, NY – Democratic mayoral candidate Bill Thompson and State Senator Jose Peralta today criticized the city’s decision to close the Corona Health Clinic, which provides free immunization services to low-income and immigrant families and non-English-speaking members of the Western Queens community. The closure comes just weeks before the start of school – leaving children and families without desperately needed health care services.

BillThompson_5011smallThe clinic administered almost 33,000 vaccines to nearly 16,000 clients last year, despite being open only two days a week.  The clinic’s scheduled last day of operation is Friday, August 16th.
“This is a rapidly growing community where public services, from healthcare to school seats, are already in short supply,” Senator Peralta said.  “We should be expanding services, not cutting them. This closure is a short-sighted move in the wrong direction.”

The city also announced it will be closing an immunization center in the Tremont section of the Bronx.
“The closures of the Corona and Tremont health centers could not be happening at a worse time—just before schools reopen, leaving our kids without the vaccinations they need to register for the year,” Bill Thompson said.  “That the closures are scheduled to occur during National Immunization Awareness Month is a bad joke to the thousands of families that depend on these services.”
