Healthcare Workers Aid Lancman’s Congressional Run

Rory Lancman’s campaign gets a shot in the arm with an endorsement by 1199 SEIU.

PRESS RELEASE: Today, 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, representing 275,000 healthcare workers in New York State, endorsed Assemblyman Rory Lancman for New York’s 6th Congressional District.  1199 SEIU President George Gresham cited Lancman’s long experience as a healthcare advocate and his leadership on leveling the playing field for ordinary New Yorkers, workplace safety and holding Wall Street accountable.  As one of the largest unions in New York City, 1199 SEIU’s endorsement is a significant boost to Lancman, who has secured the lion’s share of organized labor support in the race for the 6th Congressional District.

“Right now, working New Yorkers who have borne the brunt of this economic crisis need a champion in Washington to fight for them, and that champion is Rory Lancman,” said George Gresham, President of 1199 SEIU. “Rory is someone who understands the challenges that working families face, and time and time again has gone above and beyond to deliver for New Yorkers who work for a living. Rory has proudly stood with our members on the picket line, in the legislative chamber, in the op-ed pages and on the campaign trail, and we couldn’t be prouder to stand with him in this Congressional race.”

AAssemblyman Lancman has taken a leadership role on healthcare issues both as an elected official and as a civic leader. Before being elected to the Assembly, Rory Lancman headed the Queens County Hospital Community Advisory Board, and was instrumental in fighting against Mayor Giuliani’s attempts to privatize the hospital. In the Assembly, Lancman authored the Safe Patient Handling Act (A.1370B/S.2470B) as well as a report on the subject, authored the Health Care Workplace Violence Prevention Act (A.4856), and helped ensure safe working conditions at St. Barnabas hospital in the Bronx, which was cited by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for inadequately protecting employees from violence. Lancman thanked the union for the endorsement, and reaffirmed his commitment to fighting for working people at the national level.

“I’m extremely proud to accept the endorsement of 1199 SEIU and its members, and I look forward to fighting alongside them in Congress for higher wages, better benefits, reliable pensions, and workplace safety protections that their members and all working New Yorkers deserve,” Lancman said.

Rory Lancman is running for Congress in New York’s 6th Congressional District. Raised by a single mom in a rent-stabilized apartment, Rory understands the struggle that ordinary New Yorkers face in this economy. He went to public schools, served his country as an officer in New York’s own 42nd Infantry Division and worked a variety of jobs to put himself through college and contribute to his family. Elected to the Assembly in 2006, Rory’s focus in Albany has been on fighting for economic opportunity, keeping workers safe on the job and keeping America and our allies safe from attack. Rory is running for Congress to level the playing field for working and middle-class New Yorkers and expand opportunity so that everyone has a fair shot at the American dream.
